Frequently Asked Questions:

What’s a costume swap?
A costume swap is a chance for you, your kids, your grandkids, your neighbors, your classmates, and your friends to exchange extra or leftover Halloween costumes you have on hand! Costume swaps are held in the month of October all across the United States, and are growing in popularity. It’s an eco-friendly, wallet-friendly way to get a new look for Halloween!

How does it work?
To participate, bring complete, clean, costumes (full, themed outfits) in good to excellent condition* that you wish to donate for the swap to Norman Public Library East between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. on October 5th for an equal number of vouchers for the swap on October 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Then, return to shop at the swap on October 6th to exchange your vouchers for others’ costume donations! Just have accessories you’d like to donate? Bring those, too, in return for vouchers good for other donated accessories that are not part of complete costumes! Just a reminder - no weapons are allowed in the library, so please leave weapon-style accessories at home!

Vouchers will be honored on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day of the swap. No early entry! The library cannot guarantee that you will find a costume in your size or fit, but the more people that participate, the bigger the selection will be! This event is open to the public, not just library cardholders.
Costumes may be tried on at the event, but there won’t be dressing room spaces – just a couple mirrors – so please remember, if you want to try on costumes, wear something you can slip a costume over.
*Note: Good to excellent condition means the costume has no odors or dander, and no rips, tears, or stains that are not a part of the costume. Costumes or accessories not meeting this criteria will not be accepted.

Can I just donate costumes without coming to the swap?
Yes! Extra costumes will help expand the selection available for shoppers, and are much appreciated.

I can’t make it to the drop off. Can I just bring my donations the day of the swap?
No. Staff and volunteers need time to sort and check the costumes and to set up for the swap, and will not be distributing vouchers the day of the swap. Costumes may, however, be donated prior to the drop-off time on a case-by-case basis as evaluated by library staff.

Will there be a dressing room available for me to try on costumes?
There will be a couple of mirrors for customers to check out their new looks, but no dressing room spaces will be available at the swap. For sanitation and voucher tracking reasons, customers will not be able to take costumes into the public restrooms for dressing, either. If you wish to try on your new costume, please wear something to the swap that you can slip a costume over!

If nobody takes the costume I donated on the swap day, can I get it back at the end of the swap? What about leftover costumes and accessories?
Any and all costumes and accessories remaining at the end of the swap will be donated to local charity organizations and cannot be returned.

We hope to see you at the swap! For more information, please call Norman Public Library East at (405) 217-0770.
