This talk will speak about the origins of Hip Hop, its relationship to a Black (often male) underclass experience, its perception by outsiders as controversial as well has how it has influenced various aspects of American culture.
Catherine John, Ph. D., is a professor of English Literature at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. John's research and teaching focus on the Afro-Carribbean and African-American literature and cultural impact, Black Cinema, Blackness and Gender, and Hip Hop Pedagogy.
This lecture is presented in correlation with the 2019 PLS Reads Project, an initiative to engage the Pioneer community in reading books and having discussions around specific themes and community issues.
