Dr Brent Newsom headlines the Awards Ceremony and Poetry Celebration for the Spurr Poetry Contest. Winners of the Young Poets Contest will be named. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Young poets are invited to submit their poems during the month of April, for consideration in this contest. Categories are: 4th - 6th grades, 7th-9th grades, and 10th-12 grades.
The Jim Spurr Award for Best of Contest will also be selected. Poems, and the required Entry Form, must be submitted during April to the Shawnee Library Children's Desk, the deadline is April 30th. Each poet may submit up to 3 poems, and poems should be no more than one page in length. Click here to print out the Entry Form, or ask at the Children's Desk.
Dr. Brent Newsom, who is a poet, OBU Professor, and Library Advisory Board member, will speak at the Poetry Celebration. The young poets who participate in the Contest will be recognized during the event, and Awards will be presented for the winners.
Jim Spurr, a lifelong poet, was named the Poet Laureate of Shawnee, and believed that poetry makes a difference in our lives. Each of the contest winners will be asked to read their winning poems during the Celebration.
