Come learn more about the middle ages just for the fun of learning! No papers, no tests, just interesting information about life long ago.

This month's lecture is "Medieval Life and Monsters in the Margins of the Luttrell Psalter" presented by Joyce Coleman, OU Bambas Professor of Medieval English Literature and Culture, Director, Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies, English Department.

Around 1330 Sir Geoffrey Luttrell commissioned a psalter that has become famous for what his artists painted in the margins of the psalms. Half of the time there are detailed, accurate depictions of ordinary life, from kids stealing cherries to making dinner to archery practice to ladies traveling in what look like prairie-schooners. The other half of the time, it’s creatures with one head and two bodies, men with fish tails and cows with wings, and very angry birds. This talk will look at what the margins tell us about life and worldviews in the Middle Ages.
