Come learn more about the middle ages just for the fun of learning!

Cosponsored by OU Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies.

“The Art and Science of Renaissance Herbals” presented by Sarah Kyle, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Humanities, Director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, University of Central Oklahoma.

Come learn more about the middle ages just for the fun of learning! No papers, no tests, just interesting information about life long ago.

The collection of natural and art objects has long represented a fertile place in which the study of nature and the practices of art meet. Today's talk will introduce some of the pre-modern elements of this relationship, exploring the collaborative and generative connection between art and science in the Italian Renaissance, particularly between art and the knowledge of plants and their many uses and applications as visualized in illustrated books of plant medicine – called “herbals”. These books – like objects of nature and of art – were collected and displayed in purpose-build cabinets and complexes, libraries, and in even more unusual locales, like pharmacies.
