Please join members of the Oklahoma Theremin Society from 6 to 7:30 as they perform on the unique musical instrument that is the theremin. Attendees will also have the opportunity to play a theremin.
The theremin is one of the most unique musical instruments ever created and it is considered the first electronic instrument. You can play it without ever touching the instrument! In 1920, Soviet inventor Leon Theremin brought the theremin to the world and it is played by positioning your hands next to two metal antennas that sense the position of your hands. By moving your hands, you control the pitch with one hand and the amplitude with the other. So, in a way, when you play a theremin, you are playing the electrical current in the air next to the antennas. How cool is that? The theremin has been used for eerie effect in many 1950s science-fiction/horror movies and The Beach Boys hit "Good Vibrations."
This performance and opportunity to play a theremin is facilitated by the Oklahoma Theremin Society. Members of the Oklahoma Theremin Society will play theremins but all skill levels and ages are welcome to attend to try out this unique instrument.
