“Jewish Martyrs”

Shmuel Shepkaru, Schusterman Professor of Jewish Intellectual and Religious History, History Dept., University of Oklahoma

We think of martyrdom as a Christian concept, but Jews had accepted the idea of self-sacrifice from Roman times. Dr. Shepkaru’s talk will examine how the advent of Christianity both provided models of passive martyrdom to medieval Jews, and drove some of them to experience martyrdom when forced to choose between death and conversion.

Join us at Norman Library West for the Medieval Fair Free Lecture Series and learn more about the middle ages just for the fun of learning! No paper, no tests, just interesting information about life long ago. The Medieval Fair Free Lecture Series is Co-sponsored by the Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Lectures start at 6:15 p.m. and the Medieval Fair of Norman is April 5th-7th 2019.
