“The Hate U Give” is one of the two books being read this year during the PLS READS 2019. The other book, “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult is also available and being discussed at other locations. Check the calendar for those dates. Both books have as themes race, privilege, prejudice, justice, and compassion.

Nominated as a candidate for Oklahoma’s High School Sequoyah Award for 2019, “The Hate U Give” was recently adapted to a feature film and has been named best debut book for teens and best novel by an African-American author for children and was nominated for the 2018 Carnegie Award for literature.

Short Summary: Starr Carter--middle child, basketball player--becomes the center of a massive trial after a police officer shoots her childhood best friend right in front of her. As tensions rise in her family, neighborhood, and school, everyone has a different take on what happened, and Starr must find her own voice to be heard above the crowd.

PLS READS Sponsors are Norman Arts Council, the Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation, Pioneer Library System Foundation and Pioneer Library System.
